Dear SIR Migrant,
Thank you for responding to the SIR Visa Holder Health Care Survey. As mentioned in the survey, all the information you provided is strictly confidential and will not be used for any purposes apart from this survey.
In your response you indicated that you do not have private health insurance for you and your family. As a SIR visa holder you are not entitled to Medicare, Australia’s public health care system which provides eligible Australian residents with access to health care services. This advice was provided to you by the Australian Government’s Department of Immigration at the time your SIR visa was granted. Not having access to Medicare services means that you will be required to pay the entire cost of any health services you receive in the event of illness or emergency.
Medical services in Australia can be very expensive. It is very important that you understand the significance of this and the potential financial burden that may be placed on you and your family if you do not have adequate coverage in the event of illness or emergency. To reduce the costs of medical services, we strongly recommend that you purchase private health insurance for you and your family for the duration of your SIR visa.
A Private Health Insurance Fact Sheet, outlining the likely costs of medical services, is attached to this email to help you understand the likely costs of medical services in Victoria for those who do not have access to Medicare or private health insurance. The factsheet also includes details of different private health insurance providers.
We understand that the cost of private health insurance is expensive and that it may be difficult for you to afford at this time. However, the medical costs incurred in the event of illness or emergency will be far greater without private health insurance. Please be aware that the Australian Government’s Department of Immigration and the Victorian Government’s Skilled Migration Program will not be able to assist you in the event of illness or emergency.
For our records, could you please reply to this email advising whether you intend to take out private health insurance for you and your family as recommended above.

We look forward to your response.
Kind regards,

Dear Sir, Madam,
You strongly recommend a private health insurance for our family. I tried to arrange that in February this year at Medibank but I was told that because of us being temporary residents we weren't allowed to have private health insurance. We do have a Medicare card for cases of emergency and we think that that is enough for us for now because it covers cost for immidiately necessary help and that's the only time we will use it. The cost for a private health insurance is higher than the cost for a physiotherapist's consult, chiropractor's consult or a doctor's consult and because we don't need those things very often, we won't buy a private health insurance. We do have an ambulance cover at Medibank though.
Kind Regards,

Given it some more thought there are a couple of things I want to add to my previous email. In the first place we wanted to built up a new life and we choose Australia, our choice. You set the rules, not a problem. You want people to live regional there is a shortage in skilled people there, also no problems with that.
We are sponsored by the Victorian State meaning:
You may come to Australia. We want your skills to build up regional areas. We want your money put in the Australian economy. We want it all but expect nothing from us in return.
There is my worry. We accepted it, don't get me wrong but Medicare is at least a thing that should be given access to in my opinion. What can be the problem? Before people build up their new life they must have everything verified and tested (we were). P.e. they must be of good health & condition and shall not have a criminal record. I do not see any risk of giving access to Medicare. Yes some people might get ill or sick. We invest, you invest. There are places that give blocks of land for free to attract skilled people or reduce rates and give discounts on healthcare.
We arrived in Australia and we were told that we can have access to Medicare, no worries and we got it. We wanted also a private insurance, the information that has been given to us was that we could NOT have access to that BECAUSE we have a temporary visa. The information that has been given to us and yours is conflicting.
We are very active attracting people to Australia. Also the Wodonga council asked me to help them to attract people and I have offered my help. I want to keep doing that but I do not want to provide wrong information. Please advise.
Kind regards,
Jeroen Janssen
U bent gewaarschuwd; je mag komen, je mag werken, je mag je geld inleveren, maar je krijgt niets terug, echt niets. Mijn advies?
