Australia's population will hit the 21 million mark tonight according to the Australian Bureau of Statisitics, but exactly who will personify that milestone seems to be a mystery lost in numbers.

At lunchtime today the population was projected to be 20,999,711.

Using a complicated formula that starts with the population at the end of 2006, then adds in births, subtracts deaths and adds net international migration; the number crunchers at the bureau predict the 21st million Australian will make an appearance around 9.30 pm tonight.

It could be a newborn.

But offficials say that as the overall population figure is a projected number it's not possible to identify who that lucky baby will be.

The nuts and bolts of the ABS calculation is: resident population at December 31 2006 plus one birth every 1 minute and 56 seconds, one death every 3 minutes and 59 seconds, and one net increase in migration every 3 minutes and 15 seconds.
That means the total overall population clicks up one person every 1 minutes and 45 seconds.

At present, natural population growth (which excludes migration) accounts for an extra 125,000 Australians a year, because there are roughly twice as many births as deaths.

However, as the population ages, the statisticians predict the number of births will fall below the number of deaths by 2044, so further population increase will be dependent on net migration.
