QUEENSLAND Premier Peter Beattie has announced that Brisbane will look seriously at a future bid for the Olympic Games in 2020 or 2024.

Mr Beattie said today he could initiate some exploration into the possibility of the Queensland capital hosting a future Games.

"It will take us four or five years to prepare a bid," he said.

"Looking at the countries currently in the queue to host the Olympics, Brisbane would have to wait at least 20 years."

International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge, in Brisbane for the ONOC Conference, urged Brisbane to launch another bid for the Games.

Brisbane's last bid for the Games was in 1992.

Mr Beattie also urged the IOC to include rugby union on the Olympic program for the 2012 Games.

"The fifteen National Olympic Committees in the Oceania region including Fiji, New Zealand and Tonga would support the push for rugby," Mr Beattie said.

"Rugby’s chances are improved by the fact that Mr Rogge represented his country in the sport."

The IOC will vote on the inclusion of rugby at its next session in Singapore in July, when the 2012 host city will also be announced.

Paris and London are the favourites, with New York, Moscow and Madrid also in the running.
