A national Do Not Call Register to protect people from annoying telemarketers has started operation in response to the growth in unsolicited sales calls.
People can choose to not receive a range of telemarketing calls by listing their home and mobile numbers on the register for free and telemarketers must respect the register or face fines.
Communications Minister Helen Coonan will formally launch the register today.
Senator Coonan said even if people did not register, telemarketers would not be able to call before 9am or after 8pm on weekdays, nor before 9am or after 5pm on Saturdays.
Choice magazine spokesman Gordon Renouf told TODAY that, while any measures targeting marketing 'cold-callers' were welcome, the measure wasn't extensive enough.
"We are concerned that some calls are still coming through and they're from — surprise, surprise — the politicians, although some of them are also from charities… we think we there could be some improvements made," he said.
"It's the marketing calls that we're trying to get rid of, which are the annoying ones we don't want."
Mr Renouf emphasised that people "can't run away from their debts" by blocking calls from creditors but said relief was in sight from notorious foreign call centres.
"Most of those calls are made on behalf of businesses operating in Australia and so (authorities) can get to them if they can't get the overseas people calling you," he said.
The Do Not Call Register will make it illegal for telemarketers to call numbers listed on the register without consent, but certain organisations are exempt.
They include government bodies, educational or religious organisations, charities and registered political parties, although Senator Coonan said politicians would not be able to call if they were soliciting money.
The federal government is funding the register with $33 million over the next four years.
About $11 million will be recovered from fees charged to the telemarketing industry.
People can join the register from today by signing up at www.donotcall.gov.au.
Postal application forms are also available on the website and phone registration is coming soon.
