vind het makkelijker om in het engels te schrijven (woon hier sinds 1977)

have found out that i would have to go to sydney to renew a passport (expired more than 25 years ago ) ,

i'm beginning to consider taking on the australian nationality , seeing that i then can just go to the local post office and apply for a passport instead of appointments in sydney
would also be infinitely cheaper

Welcome!
I guess the question really is, do you need a Dutch passport? Maybe you can give the consulate a call to see what is best for you?
If you don't intend to travel you can do without. Here is the number 02 9387 3962
Becoming a citizen makes it cheaper, because you won't need a resident return visa when you do travel.
If you are married to an Australian you can keep your Dutch passport. After so many years in this beautiful country and you never went back, you must have a reason to have waited this long....

Hi thank you for your input and advice .
Do i need a dutch passport , i was thinking of attending a gathering in new zealand for a celebration for my wife's sister , who
has been with an organisation for 50 years in september 2016 .
to make things a little more interesting: my wife has an australian passport but is of indian extraction born in fiji .
we met in sydney and the rest is history . ( i used to live in sydney )
i also have to way up things like the age pension from holland and see if i will still have
any entitlements to that should i get an ozzie passport .

many thanks
bert

entitlements should not be an issue, as everything is in your name. But again maybe it would be smart to contact the embassy. Your wife is Australian so you can hold both passports, not a problem.
Wouldn't it be nice to go to New Zealand together? It would probably make things a little easier with the passport if you still have the old one. But you started this in time, so you will be fine.

It doesn't matter what her lineage is or where she was born, as long as she has a certificate showing her Australian citizenship and you have a marriage certificate (with dutch translation and stamps) showing you're married to her you can obtain Ozzie citizenship without losing the Dutch. But if you want to travel in Sep 16 you better get started.

Your entitlement for age pension is not dependent on your citizenzhip in any way. It only depends on how long you've lived in the Netherlands since your 15th birthday. And as you've lived in Oz since 1977, that won't be a whole lot so I wouldn't worry about that at all.

Hi Katja ,

Thank you very much for your reply , very helpful and like you say , don't hang around , but get going .

Thanks again ,

You probably wouldn't even have to do the citizenship test.
My wife's aunty and uncle (both late 70's) have been here since the 80's and didn't have to sit the test.
Their longest wait was for the actual ceremony. What will probably take you the longest is getting some paperwork together.
Sometimes things can go very quick; I lodged my application on Thursday night, got a call on Friday arvo, sat the test the next week.
But it took 2 months to be scheduled in for a ceremony night and another few weeks for a passport.

You really want to go for AU citizenship, just because it's easier to get a passport? Seriously?

If that really is the case, I would reconsider your decision, AFAIK it will be possible for people to get a new passport/driving license by mail. I am not sure where I read it and I can't find it right now and I'm neither sure if it is for people living in the Netherlands only. Google is your friend :)

You'll need to provide finger prints in person. You can receive the actual document by mail so you don't have to go back again.
