Timber/wood may be imported as a commodity in a highly processed state such as high quality furniture, picture frames, tool handles, composite wood material etc, or as sawn timber. The latter represent a significantly higher risk for the introduction of quarantine pests if not properly treated.
Wood packaging (including dunnage) is classed as non-commodity and poses a high quarantine risk if not properly treated.
Here are 3 simple steps to follow on how to find information on importing timber and timber related products:
- Identify the type of timber products your goods are included in.
- Search ICON for the import conditions for that category of product.
- If ICON states that a permit is required, submit a permit application.
To facilitate clearance ensure that all relevant paperwork (including permits and other documentation as required in ICON) is presented to theAQIS Regional office in the state or territory of import.
If you are planning on purchasing an item overseas and mailing it to Australia or purchasing items via mail order over the internet, please view tips for mail ordering goods from the internet into Australiamail order and internet purchases.
If you are travelling overseas you must declare for inspection all timber or plant material/products, food or animal products on arrival in Australia to ensure they are free of pests and diseases. Please view What can’t I take into Australia? for further information.
