HI everyone,
Hoe gaat het?Im am the guy whoose girlfriend is Mariekske.I am from Ireland and we are in the process of getting sponsorship and going back to Aus to live there for a couple of years.
In the meantime while we are waiting to go back im looking for information from anyone who has learned Dutch or who is in the process or learning it or even a native speaker to give me any ideas on what books to buy that they found easy to use and very helpful.
Cheers

Hello Liam!

Nice to see some more Irish presence on the boards  I am Belgian but I live in Northern Ireland myself. Whereabouts are you from? I am based in "Beal Feirste", county Antrim.

Hi Liam, welcome here!

Maybe it is an idea to start reading children's books. It seems to help when you are learning a language.

Good luck!

Henriette

Hi cracked pleasures.
Cheers for the reply. Im from Tramore co Waterford. How is Belfast treating you i have never been there myself but i have heard good things about the nightlife there. Have you seen much of the country and how long have you been living in Ireland for.?Where i come from Tramore its a nice area but it has its tacky bits because its a seaside tourist town a bit like blackpool in England
Keep it real man
have fun

Hi Liam,

I already welcomed you I think under Mariekske's name, nice to see you have your own name now.

I am Scottish and have lived here for 13 years, it took a lot of effort to learn Dutch.  I didn't like classes, too structured and not flexible.  I started off with a Linguaphone course on cassettes, but technology has progressed since then so CD's/internet might be a better option, you can go at your own pace.

Childrens books are a good idea, one of my favourites was Dribbel's (Spot's) Grote (big) woordenboek (word book).  Read newspapers (De Telegraaf is not too difficult) and watch the news, use subtitles to be able to follow it.

I found learning with my Dutch partner didn't work, not nice to be corrected all the time, but good to have for example a Dutch hour, when you try to talk only Dutch.

Good luck!

Groetjes,
Susan

Hi Liam,

Waterford is still on my list to visit... I'm a groundhopper and try to see every stadium in Ireland at least once, and Waterford United is still on the list. I hope to visit the stadium and town the coming weeks during a league game (maybe the derby vs Cork City? should be a good crowd then)

I live in Ireland now for 23 months, next month I'm celebrating two years on the green island! I have always had an interest in Ireland, and then when I had the opportunity to come over I didn't hesitate  I first lived in Dublin for a year, then moved to Belfast. I have also visited Longford, Drogheda, Bray, Dalkey, Dun Laoghoire, Galway, Aran Islands, Limerick, Derry, Lurgan. I hope to do the Skellig Rocks, Enniskillen, Sligo, Cork and Donegal soon, though for Donegal it'd be handy if I'd meet someone else who is travelling around as carpooling is much handier in rural areas than doing it by bus.

Belfast is okay, there's some good culture in here and especially nice architecture. When I moved to Belfast, people told me I'm crazy (well, I am, but that's not the point ) but it's really surprising how welcoming this town is. The sectarian element still exists though it's improving very well. Amongst the people I sometimes meet, there's a mixture of catholics and protestants, but everyone's just friends with each other and trying to leave the past behind  Nightlife? Well, Belfast is kinda notorious for it yes, it's not as big as Dublin but there's some good clubs around apparently, as belfast was voted 3rd best citytrip destination in the UK recently... I am not going to too much clubs myself, but I do see lot of tourists coming over from Scotland or England to go out here.

All in all, I'm enthousiast about Ireland. Very friendly people, lovely sceneries, and culturally very nice (I love Irish folk music and such). Only the rain is a pain sometimes, but I was used to that as Belgium's kinda wet as well   I still have to see a GAA game though, that's something I definitely need to do while living in this country!

PS: if you ever need help in learning Dutch, just ask. I am from the Dutch-speaking side of Belgium originally, but through internet and messageboards I kept my Dutch up-to-date since I moved to Ireland. We have a few words which are different from the Dutch spoken in Holland, but overall it's the same language with just a different dialect (bit like American and British English). Don't let Flemish people tell you differently: it IS the same language, some of us Belgians are just a bit too patriottic to admit we speak the same language as our neighbours...

Hi sir,

Welcome aboard har har har (where is the pirate smiley?). Have fun
