Interstate migration to hit SA population growth
New Bureau of Statistics figures show South Australia will be unable to continuously increase its population over the coming decades due to interstate migration.
The new report says while the rest of the country will see an increase in population until 2051, South Australia and Tasmania will not.
Matthew Montgomery from the ABS says South Australia's population will peak in 2032 at 1.6 million people.
"Its interstate migration component... it historically has lost people to the rest of Australia and if that continues South Australia's population will decrease from around 2032," he said.
He says that a natural decline is also to blame for the drop in population and that by 2051 there will be 7,000 more deaths than births.
The average age of South Australians is set to increase by more than 10 years, over the next four decades.
The report also says that the average age of South Australians will continue to be two years older than those in other states.
Business SA chief executive Peter Vaughan has expressed alarm at the figures, saying the state and federal governments need to work together to bring more migrants to South Australia.
"That combined effort can achieve great things in a relatively short time, but if we don't take the action, none of it will be achieved and we face a population crisis by 2030," he said.
"There has to be a dramatic increase of younger people into this state, and that, in my view, can only be affected by a massive increase in migration, it will not be done by local home-based fertility because it's just not going to happen."
