Rate rise 'bad for suburban residents'
Wednesday Aug 2 10:38 AEST
Inner city and metropolitan suburban homeowners will struggle most to adapt to higher interest rates, the nation's largest debt collection company says.
Prushka chief executive Roger Mendelson said because people in cities carried higher levels of debt than their country counterparts, interest rate rise would hurt most in metropolitan areas.
The Reserve Bank has lifted the official cash rate by a quarter of a percentage point, to six per cent.
Mr Mendelson said the rate rise, coupled with higher petrol prices, would put the squeeze on an increasing number of people.
"Household debt is generally less in regional areas than in the city because land costs and general living expenses are lower," he said in a statement.
"The impact of the rate rise on record levels of household debt, together with the soaring petrol prices, will have a severe impact on household budgets."
Mr Mendelson said people would have to trim spending in order to cope with the rate rise.
He said homeowners should start planning now on how to reduce their spending.
