Storms, winds set to continue
04mar06
WILD winds and storms which have closed beaches, brought down power lines and contributed to a landslide will continue to drive across southeast Queensland this weekend.
Despite days of wet weather, the region's dams remain desperately low. They have risen 1 per cent or less over the past two days and those which supply Brisbane remain about a third full.
Forecasts suggest today will present the best chance for significant rainfall but that too little will fall in the critical dam catchment areas. The heaviest rain will be close to the coast and too far west to fill the dams.
Flooding on the NSW mid and north coasts has cut off several small towns. More rain means river levels are not expected to peak until at least tomorrow.
But cruel weather of the opposite kind in southern farming areas means fruit and vegetable prices have skyrocketed.
Drought conditions in Victoria have wreaked havoc on crops, affecting prices around the country.
The World Championship Tour surf events on the Gold Coast have been cancelled because of dangerous and worsening conditions.
Beaches are expected to remain shut today and some shark nets may have been damaged by rough seas.
