AMSTERDAM - Ten minste vijftien mensen zijn woensdagmorgen gewond geraakt bij een bomaanslag op een verzekeringsbedrijf in de Australische stad Darwin. Dat heeft de Australische politie gemeld.
Volgens de politie had de verdachte een explosief verstopt in een winkelwagentje, waarmee hij het verzekeringskantoor binnenreed.

Een woordvoerder van de politie laat tegenover ABC News weten dat de explosie enorm was. Er vielen minstens vijftien gewonden. Twee van hen zijn er ernstig aan toe.

De verdachte, een ontevreden klant van het verzekeringsbedrijf TIO, gaf zichzelf later aan op het politiebureau. Een terroristische aanslag wordt uitgesloten.

Zij geven aan 7 gewonden. Zoiets is vreselijk! Het zijn onschuldige mensen!

Aanslag met winkelwagen in Noord-Australië

DARWIN - Zeker vijftien mensen zijn woensdag gewond geraakt toen in de Australische stad Darwin, in het uiterste noorden van het land, een winkelwagentje vol met brandstof en vuurwerk ontplofte in een verzekeringskantoor. Een man reed de winkelwagenbom naar binnen en ontstak de inhoud van het het karretje. Drie van de gewonden zijn er ernstig aan toe, meldde het Australische persbureau AAP.

De politie heeft het centrum van Darwin afgezet en onderzoekt de aanslag. In het kantoor is naar eventuele andere bommen gezocht. De dader is aangehouden en heeft volgens een zegsman van de politie een slepend conflict met het getroffen verzekeringskantoor. Een aangrenzende supermarkt raakte zwaar beschadigd.

Erg sneu voor de mensen die daar werkten.
Bleek dat de man slecht behandeld werd door de TIO werknemers.
TIO is een verzekerings kantoor/ bank.
werken enkele met een vervelende attitude.
Om dan met enkele benzine cans en rotjes in je mond binne te wandelen.

Kreeg van de mensen om me heen te horen dat er een terroristische aanslag was gepleegd.
Enkele minuten later kreeg ik ander nieuws , dat er een mafkees die slecht tegen de hitte kon binnen liep met jerry cans.

Had beter de betreffende persoon op zijn bek geslagen dan deze laffe daad.
Helaas het is gebeurd en hij zal er voor moeten boeten.
Hopelijke vallen er geen doden want 4 zijn in kritieke toestand melde ze op radio op mijn weg naar huis.
Lekker voor de vrouwtjes en kindjes die het nieuws te horen krijgen waarom daddy in kritieke toestand in hospital ligt

Dit nieuws is als een vuurtje rond de wereld gegaan zonder vuurwerk rotjes.........

TIO bombing described as a 'mini Bali'

THE BOMBING of a Darwin TIO office that resulted in nineteen victims being taken to hospital has been described as a ''mini Bali''.

Seven of those victims remain in Royal Darwin Hospital.

Four with the worst wounds are in the High Dependency Unit, two are being treated in the Burns Ward, and a man in his 30s is being monitored in the Coronary Care unit.

The explosion at the Woolworths branch of TIO on Cavanagh St at 11am on Wednesday has been described as the end of the Territory's age of innocence.

Trauma Response Centre executive director Len Notaras said of the 19 victims who were treated at Royal Darwin Hospital; 14 were brought in by St John Ambulance and one person was taken to hospital in a private car.

Another four presented at hospital throughout the night.

"(The final four) were mainly with smoke inhalation and general concerns over their health," he said.

"Seven victims are still in hospital.

"We have a range of people with burns to their hands and arms.

"The burns are fairly extensive, four needed to go to theatre to have their wounds cleaned - they will be monitored over the next few days.

"The main injuries were burns, inhalation of toxic fumes, and mild airway injuries."

The worst affected had burns on up to 20 per cent of their body.

Dr Notaras said the victims were in a state of disbelief about the horror of the blast.

"I've been through and seen all but one (of the victims left in hospital)," he said.

"All are telling the same story of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"They are all being very strong."

Dr Notaras said Royal Darwin Hospital was mobilised within 15 minutes to help the wounded.

Police, TIO warned of disgruntled claimant

EXTRA security had been rostered on at the Woolworths Darwin shopping centre in the days before yesterday's bombing after threats of an attack were made.

The Northern Territory News understands the bomber made repeated threats to TIO in recent days and ISSWorld security had rostered extra guards at the Cavenagh St office.

It is understood he had also made threats against his solicitors, Ward Keller.

The partner of a security worker yesterday posted messages on Facebook saying the man had been making threats all week.

"This guy was making threats for the last few days," she said.

"(They) had to roster on extra guards because of the last few days. (My partner) has been telling ... me not to go to TIO since the first threat (we have to make a payment).

"Actually, I am kind of glad (he) did find some(one) this morning to cover shifts or chances are, I'd most likely be at that hospital wondering how my kids' father is eh?"

Police were warned that the disgruntled customer had threatened to attack the Territory Insurance Office before yesterday's explosion.

And TIO was also warned - sparking the move to roster more security guards for the office.

The disgruntled claimant is believed to have pushed a trolley full of fireworks and fuel into the TIO office on Cavenagh Street yesterday just before 11am.

He then fled the burning building and ran less than a kilometre to the Darwin Police Station and confessed to the crime over the front counter.

Police Commander Colleen Gwynne confirmed the attacker had made threats to police and TIO prior to the attack. "There has been some history between this person that we have in custody and TIO," she said.

"It's clear he wasn't happy with a service he was being provided."

TIO chief executive Richard Harding described the attack as an "isolated incident".

"It doesn't appear to be an ongoing threat," he said. "Of course, it's absolutely concerning that he's a disgruntled complainant."

Commander Gwynne said it was unlikely the man would be charged by this morning and a team of 50 police was investigating the attack.
