Finally, Queensland turns to fluoride
Sarah Elks | December 05, 2007
QUEENSLAND will finally add fluoride to its water supplies from next year, in a move to remedy its dental health woes and bring it into line with other states and territories.
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh today announced the state government would begin introducing fluoride into southeast Queensland water supplies by the end of 2008, with other areas to follow.
Ms Bligh said 50 per cent of Queenslanders would be drinking fluoridated water by the end of next year, 80 per cent by the end of 2009 and more than 90 per cent by 2012.
Queenslanders have the worst teeth in Australia; six year olds have 30 per cent more decay in their baby teeth than the national average.
While all other states and territories introduced fluoride into their water supplies in the 1960s and 1970s, Queenslanders were hesitant.
Townsville is Queensland's only city with fluoridated water; it was introduced in 1964. The north Queensland centre now has 65 per cent lower tooth decay rates in children than Brisbane.
The Queensland government will foot the $35 million bill to roll out the program.
Ms Bligh said local councils would be expected to contribute to the operating costs of fluoridation, expected to cause a $1.50 water rate rise, per customer, per year.

Bedankt Mrs. Bligh, for minding my business.
