How about adventure and outdoor sports in Australia?

So why this topic?
I  need to talk and write in English, so I thought to start a topic about something that’s going on in Australia and also I wanted to discuss an interest of me and hopefully lots of other people. And I know that there is a very good topic “For everyone who feels like speaking English....”, but I just wanted to talk about the possibilities of adventure and outdoor sports in Australia. These are actually two topics but in one.
So I hope this will be interested for other people as well.
And, if you notify some mistakes in my English, don’t hesitate to correct me.

Some history:
Just about a month ago we arrived at our destination which was in Gambia. Before that 17 days were needed to drive from Amsterdam to Banjul and all this took place in an old car and that just for fun and a good charity. Also we drove through the desert, the Sahara, it took us four days with lots of fun but also pressure because of all the breakdowns of the cars. There were 4 crazy old cars (an Opel Kadett, a Seat Terra, a small bus: Daihatsu Hijet and a luxury car: The Chrysler Voyager) an one old 4x4, a Lada Niva from Russia with a heater and small windows. Speaking of adventure and a challenge it was!

But the desert inspired me, because of its diversity. I guess we were shortly after a rainy season, because there was some grass growing, camel grass. The animals we’ve seen were lots of camels, in total hundreds of them, the most of them were tamed.
And the funniest thing was, every time the desert did change. It is not a big sandbox as it is drawn in strip cartoons, but you will find some trees and those vegetation as I was talking about.

I talked also with people we met later on our trip who have walked through the desert! Must be some experience as well and you don’t have the car breakdowns! They arranged a small expedition and a local guide and they told us that every day was a different one, walking from well to well.

Because I never have been to Australia I don’t know the deserts over there, so is there someone who feels like telling me more about it?

Besides adventures and trekking, whenever possible, we like sports climbing, mountaineering, alpine climbing, skiing and canoeing. And of course, there will be more to explore…

Well, lots of fun,
See you, Alexandra :)

ha , ya li da
(oeps forgot shan)

Some  Lada Niva from Russia

Mmm I now that car , That is the best lada ever made !!!!!!!!!!!
, had a lot of ozzie fun in that car.
I drove from Alice springs to darwin with that car, sweet road trip. :drive:

I don't think you have to worry about missing out in dessert fun in oz , the most of it is dessert, ha and I had a good 4x4 fun on frasier island , the biggest sand eiland in the world (feels like driving in deep snow, beaty) :freezing:

And of course don't forget sky diving, scuba diving and bunji jumping. :-D

HEy Ya Li Shan Da , as you wrote you wouldn't mind to be corrected... here it goes:

These are actually two topics but in one.
I would refrase this to : These are actually two topics in one.

So I hope this will be interested for other people as well.
the word interested should be interesting in this phrase.

if you notify some mistakes in my English, don’t hesitate to correct me.
notify = inform sombody about something. I would have used "notice"

The next one I would just refraise, but still use the same words :

I talked also with people we met later on our trip who have walked through the desert!
I also talked with people, we met later during our trip, who had walked through the desert!

Ok, all I can say I have been tought by the best (Rene  :gramps: )

Wow I guess I can't help you out here, I only know that you need a lot of water when traveling through the dessert.
Sorry I can't help you any further there.
I used to go to the aples a lot when I was younger, we always hiked and even went on glaisures until I almost dropped into a hole and could just hang on. I would have made a drop of ove 100 meters, since then I am affraid of depths.

See ya,
Koen

If you compare it to all the other Lada's ever made... well maybe. But you couldn't imagine the s**tload of trouble we've gotten from that car... well since my english will fail me when it gets to car mechanics here a short list in dutch:

Aanhoudende elektrische ellende - Continu Variabele Olieinname - Gebroken distributiekettinggeleider - Koelingsproblemen - Losgeraakte stuurstang - Gebroken stuurhuis - Gescheurde stuurkogel - Kapot startmotorrelais - Algehele dienstweigering door motor - Lekkage achterdifferentieel

Sorry for failing this topic's rules on this one, and a great challenge for y'all: Who'll be the first to have the full translation of the above? No cheating with online dictionaries!

No no no we were talking adventure sports here. I can still agree with the diving (sky and sea) but bungee jumping  :p that's just for lazy people who also want to get their near death experience

Just to give Koengaroe a cookie of own dough

I can strongly advise you (and anyone) to learn your alpine skills with the NKBV before setting foot on any glacier. Doing so without skills or an alpine guide, a climbing rope, crampons, icepicks and/or axes shows great disrespect for the Mountain, you'll never now if it chooses to punish you for that :-o guess this one just chose to scare you

You mean sports climbing, mountaineering, alpine climbing aren't adventures?  :)

(shut up l&miles you're getting to be annoying)

It's adventure and outdoor sports galore in Oz!

Haven't been in the outback (or desert) yet myself, but have to tell that from whereever you live here, the outback is quite far (from Brisbane at least 1000k west ....), so it's never gonna be weekend business when living here (unless you live in Alice, obviously). But if you fancy rainforesty areas for bushwalks (my preferred past time) or climbing, you're in luck here. Brisbane: a one hour drive south and you're in Lamington NP, 30 minutes west and you're in Brisbane State Forest, 1 hour north Kondalilla NP etc etc. Sydney also has heaps of NPs quite near to the city, of which the Blue Mountains are most well known. I would love to go direction Hawkesbury river some day!! Area is featured in movie 'the Oyster Farmers'. Wow! Melbourne: Grampians are well known, but north from Melbourne there are also a couple nice NPs I believe. Tassie, well, never been there, but should be absolutely good! For watersports in Oz, no need to say we' re in surf country number 1. Also Camping is absolutely great here. Ah well, plenty to do and see. One of the things that I would miss most if we'd ever decide to go back home to mother Europe ... .

Besides the fact that I enjoy picking on people and enjoy to be picked on by people, I would love the chance to set this quote straight, Since it apparently was lacking of information about the circumstances that day.

Please be informed about the fact that it was a guided tour, we were trained by people who did these tours every single day, we were tied to robes and I hate to say I was only 10 years of age at the time.
So trust me I do have the upmost respect for the Alpes and mountains and since that day I have even greater respect for them.

However now that I clarefied this to you I admit to be absolutely in agreement with you about this quote.

Well wat can I say, tying yourself to a robe is an alpine technique I never heard of  (warn me if I get too annoying) l&miles you're annoying! (ok sry  )

Thanks Robin.... it would be a odd sight if you would see people walking on a glacier been tied to each other by "robes" instead of climbing Rope...  :applaus: :lol1: :eek:ops!: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Now of course I will pay more attention to what I write but also to what you write....

Hey Robin.... Just take it as a man.... no need to look for weak excuses.....  :sword:  :lol1:

Dern.

Everyone goes skiing these days. It really ticks me off, being a spoiled little brat used to skiing holidays every year. Why?

Because I'm not going!!! No snow for me. And everyone's telling me to shut up since I've had my six weeks of Africa adventure, while they pack their sunglasses and ski boots. You can expect them to send me enthusiastic SMSes about crisp, endless slopes and fresh tracks in powder.

DERN!!!

I was waiting for you to pick out some spelling errors, Koengaroo, and for all the others to tell me "Shut up, you've had your six weeks of Africa adventure. Now I'm off to Les Trois Vallées or Les Portes Du Soleil, I'll send you an SMS to tell you how much fun I'll be having".
But, it's Dern. Almost the same as Darn, but with an e instead of an a.  Et je touche!

Ok no worry's I was just wondering... I have never heard of DERN. I have heard of DARN... I wasn't picking on you .... yet....  :-D

Good things will come for those who wait....  :-D ... So I am very patient.

Greetz.Koen

@Koengaroo: thanks for your corrections, it absolute will helps me.

@Amoz: So, Brisbane is the place to be for us as rockclimbers. That's good to hear, because there is a big chance that we will end up in that place. Big second place is Adelaide!
