Main Roads WA found problems during a safety assessment of a gravel road at the centre of a fatal crash, a court was told yesterday.
Dutch woman Linda Huiskamp, 26, has pleaded not guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of her passenger, Suzanne van der Schoot. They were backpacking across Australia.
The crash happened on April 3 at the intersection of Murray Road and South Coast Highway in Dalyup, near Esperance.
The prosecution has alleged Ms Huiskamp drove on Murray Road past a warning and stop sign and through the intersection without stopping. Her station wagon was hit side-on by a vehicle travelling on the highway, killing Ms van der Schoot.
On the second day of the trial in the District Court in Esperance, the jury heard evidence from David Moyses, from Main Roads, who carried out a safety assessment of the intersection.
He found that the stop sign was partly obscured by a tree and was too far from the verge.
He said the approach sight distance - the technical term for the minimum distance a driver could see the intersection - was below Australian standards.
Based on the guidelines from Austroads, the minimum ASD was 171m on Murray Road to the intersection. However, Mr Moyses said he calculated the sight distance on the day of the crash was only 65m.
An advisory sign - warning drivers of the stop sign - was too small for the road, which had a speed limit of 110km/h, Mr Moyses said.
Under cross-examination from defence lawyer Frances Veltman, Mr Moyses said in the "worst case scenario" a driver would not have been able to see the stop sign until they were 75m away.
Lachlan Millar told the court he did a road safety audit for the Shire of Esperance in November 2010.
Mr Millar assessed the intersection as "high risk" and said he told the shire it should "close the intersection or accept the sub-standard conditions".
The trial continues today.
Maar wel met een schuld aan advocaten van 10.000 euries!!!
Vind dat toch een beetje vreemd die wet in WA!!
Verschrikkelijk!!100.000 Euro, volgens NOS.
Dus vrijgesproken, maar:
* Getekend voor het leven
* Financieel compleet uitgekleed...
En waarom?
accept the sub-standard conditions
Zou het verschil uitmaken als ze dat deed?
