Croc caper double trouble

Renee Whiley
A DARWIN woman, mistaken for the "lady in pink" who went for a swim in croc-infested water at Shady Camp, says she is not "pretty stupid in pink".

Twenty-seven-year-old Renee Whiley told the Northern Territory News yesterday she had been swamped with text messages and phone calls from friends and colleagues after the NT News published a picture of a woman in a pink bikini after a dip at Shady Camp last week.

"Lots of people sent texts and rang, and they all wanted to know how I could have been so stupid," Ms Whiley said.

"I had no idea what they were talking about until someone asked if I had seen Wednesday's paper."

Ms Whiley said when she bought the newspaper - with "Pretty stupid in pink" on the front page - she was dumbfounded - as was the woman behind the counter.

"The lady who sold the paper looked at me and back at the front page.

"Then she said, 'That's you'.

"I have to admit I can see where people got the idea from, it does look a bit like me."

Even Ms Whiley's fiance, Daniel Shuker, couldn't believe his eyes when he saw the photos of the "lady in pink".

"Even he thought it was me," Ms Whiley told the Northern Territory News. "Obviously everyone thought so."

She said after the NT News had published photos of bikini girls posing on a croc trap she had told all her friends about the girls' stupidity.

"Everyone knew what I thought of people being stupid enough to climb on croc traps, and suddenly they thought I went for a swim a Shady Camp," she said.

"Friends started calling me a hypocrite."

She said it was not the first time she had been mistaken for someone else.

"Sometimes people tell me they saw me out somewhere, but it wasn't me.

"I wonder if it was the same girl again - this chick has caused me a lot of problems."

Ms Whiley said she had been out with friends from Adelaide - but not at Shady Camp - the day the photos were taken.

"My friends thought it was really funny, they took lots of copies of the paper back to Adelaide to show 'my' photo around.

"I'll send a copy to my parents in Tasmania," she said.

Muslims hungry for NT camels

LARINE STATHAM

February 22nd, 2010

Muslims across the country are licking their lips at the thought of utilising a resource that has been overlooked for decades, but was once used to pioneer central Australia.

An abattoir near Alice Springs is on the verge of signing a contract to supply at least 10 per cent of Australia's muslim population with halal camel meat.

The first Muslims in Australia arrived in 1860 as economic migrants, prepared to work tirelessly to develop the vast interior.

Hailing from Afghanistan, India and Pakistan, they brought with them a great understanding of arid lands, as well as the 20,000 one-humped dromedaries needed to carry out the gruelling work.

From 1920 onwards, as roads improved and the use of motor vehicles for freight haulage increased, the numbers of captive domestic camels declined and many were released into the wild.

And now, according to Garry Dann, who runs the abattoir operation at Wamboden, about 30 kilometres north of Alice Springs, Australian Muslims could again play an important part in overcoming a problem of national significance.

Feral camels, spread across parts of South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland, are estimated to total about one million at present and are tipped to double within the next eight or nine years.

A partnership between Mr Dann and a halal distributor based in Melbourne could result in more Muslims helping to conserve Australia's native flora and fauna by consuming the feral food.

Pending certification, it's a plan that has the full support of Imam Kafrawi Hamzah from the Alice Springs Mosque.

"Eating camel meat has become popular now," he told AAP.

He said interest in the product would grow even further once halal camel meat was readily available for purchase nationally.

Mr Dann told AAP he had been asked to supply about 10 per cent of Australia's Muslim population, or 100,000 people, with half a kilogram of halal camel meat each per week.

"That equates back to 50 tonnes a week, which gets back to 400 bloody camels or more, and that's just within domestic capital cities," he said.

He said such an increase in demand may require the slaughtering to be done by Centralian Gold at Wamboden, and for the boning and processing to be sent to South Australia.

"We just won't have the storage space," Mr Dann said.

Under Islamic faith, Muslims must not consume meat unless it has been slaughtered by a Muslim and it must not have come into contact with the flesh of a pig in any way.

Once meat is slaughtered the halal way, it is lawful for a Muslim to consume it.

"We have so many people ready to be slaughtermen for camel," Imam Hamzah said.

"And we try to tell the government this will create jobs.

"Why should we waste this animal by shooting it when it could be consumed by Muslims?

"Many people all over the world are hungry, they have no food, no meat - so why should we waste this kind of meat?"

Cane toads MEATING their match

NADJA HAINKE

TERRITORY cane toads have found a deadly enemy of an unlikely source - cat food and native meat ants.

The killer insects have already slaughtered millions of toads in the Adelaide River floodplain - about 60km east of Darwin - as part of a scientific experiment.

The ground-breaking finding is now hoped to contribute to the feral toad's extinction.

University of Sydney school of biological science Professor Rick Shine said the toads were poorly-equipped to stand a fight against the small insects.

He said cane toads did not try to avoid meat ants at great speed, unlike their native counterparts, including frogs and other toad species.

"If we understand the vulnerability of the cane toad we can develop a number of combined tactics to combat this deadly invader," he said.

Prof Shine and his colleagues Georgia Ward-Fear and Greg Brown used cat food to lure the native meat ants closer to young cane toads during the study in last year's dry season.

The team found ant densities and toad mortalities increased "more than fourfold" with the addition of the food baits.

"We can look at an interaction that's already happening, meat ants are already killing millions of cane toads," Prof Shine said.

"We're just looking to make it a bit easier for them (with the bait)."

The research, funded by the Australian Research Council, was published in the Journal of Applied Ecology this month.

It found the killer ants were a low threat to native wildlife and the technique was inexpensive.

The research strengthened evidence found during a study conducted by the team in March last year.

It is hoped the technology will be part of a multi-pronged attack on cane toads.

"No single control will be a silver bullet to eradicate the cane toad from the Australian landscape," Prof Shine said.

"But if we understand the biology of cane toads and their interactions with Australian fauna we'll be in a much better position to control them."

Not bad at all,
